49er Football and Crab Feed
For my birthday this year Leesi and Rebekah formed a syndicate and bought three tickets to the 49ers vs. NY Jets football game at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on Sunday, December 7. I flew to San Jose mid-day on Saturday, December 6. Lynn graciously picked me up curbside at the airport.
Crab Feed
In agreeing with the arrangements for my brother (Randy) and father (Wally) to attend the game with me, Randy and Lynn (my sister-in-law) decided they would treat me to an all-you-can-eat crab cioppino dinner the preceding Saturday, which is one of four dinners held annually by the I.F.E.S. Society in Mountain View, CA. The organization is known as the brotherhood of the Festa of the Holy Spirit, or Irmandade da Festa do Espirito Santo. The IFES was organized in 1926 to carry on the Portuguese traditions of the Azores (a group of nine islands off the west coast of Portugal).
We arrived at 3:30 pm in anticipation of the doors opening at 4:00 pm. Dinner is served from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. There were 44 of us that Lynn had organized for this dinner - most of them were there to celebrate Ernie Dutra's 75th birthday which was that day - December 6. Ernie is Portuguese and his family is from the Azores.
Here's the setting provided (two plates, cup, bib and fork) along with some extras provided by Alison (lemons from Lynn). The circle on the paper table cloth marks the spot where the crab bowl is placed. Soda and wine are included - drinks are available for purchase at the bar.
Alison likes to have melted butter with her crab, so she brings along her own warmer...as did many others.
Some people just can't be satisfied unless they bring their own sautee - white wine, butter, garlic, and "limon" - complete with warming kettle.
49ers Football
On Sunday December 7 I was treated to my first professional football game. Leesi, in addition to the tickets, had arranged for my flight up and back and provided some spending money for food at the game. Wow! What a treat!
We left about 11:00 am for the 1:00 pm kick off time. Traffic was light and we got to South San Francisco about noon. Randy stopped at Darby Dans Sandwiches Company for some sandwiches to take to the game. After making our way around the Candlestick Park parking lot, we finally found a spot to park at about 12:40.
Stadium entrance. I'd been to the stadium many times to watch the SF Giants play baseball, but never the 49ers.
Since it was Pearl Harbor Day, they unfurled a large flag across the field for the national anthem and included fireworks for "the rocket's red glare."
Once we got to the car, we had to wait 90 minutes before we could even start driving. We just listened to the post-game show on the radio and watched the tail-gaters eat their bbq dinners and play football in between the parked cars. We got back to San Jose about 7:00 and had dinner at Vesuvio's (Thanks, Ran).
After spending the night again at Dad's place, Randy picked me up at 5:45 am Monday for my return flight to Burbank. From there I went directly to work in Glendale for the day before returning home that evening.
Thanks for a fun weekend Leesi and Rebekah!
